Sun-Daze

Seems like summer’s gone. Rain, gloom and coolness have set in and aren’t abating for some time. I wish I had appreciated Summer more, I complained about and squandered too many oppressive, but sunny days. Choosing instead to hide in my hot little cell, in front of a glowing screen. Lack of an easily accessible beach or pool, did contribute to this avoidance, but in the last few days I had come to my senses. This only makes my foolishness all the more apparent and disappointing. However, this realisation is not completely unwelcomed, as it also signals a new beginning. My first Winter in Japan and all the wonderful and terrible things that will entail.

In usual Japanese fashion, I was treated to a spectacle, pleasantly unexpected. Riding home from work yesterday afternoon, I came across this on the 246…

It’s a matsuri, this was a fairly small one, locals I would guess.

There was a small ute, with drummers and flute players leading the procession, which I think, ends up at a temple just off the highway.

Interestingly, for an area so close to Shibuya and commonly frequented by gaijins, lots of people seemed surprised about me being there and taking photos. It was insane seeing people take up 2 of 4 lanes, of a constantly busy traffic artery, on a Sunday afternoon.

Later on I went to Oli’s place to say ‘Hi’ to his Mum and work on some zines that we are making soon. On the way I saw this. It’s a terrible photo (that I almost didn’t manage to take), but it’s one of these. The best thing about it was the Snow White & Dwarf airbrushed masterpiece on the rear panel.
